The Wonders of Autumn

By Bette McGregor

Three leaves of blazing red on

Summer’s green-leaved Dogwood tree,

A telltale sign that autumn days

Are treading paths where summer played.

While down the country lane, I see

Sumac once again dazzling in its

Cloak of red, as autumn reigns in summer’s stead.

Three sounds of autumn too I hear

Noisy blue jays circle near. In

Fields of ripened grain there wafts

The crows “caw! caw!” refrain. Midst

Darkened wood the owl calls “who-o-o”

In tones that bid summer adieu.

I see bright autumn, hear its voice

And my heart sings a “Rejoice! Rejoice!”
